Found under a very large tree...I think that this is a maple syrup tap. Also a pocketwatch,of no value...Searched approx. 6 hrs...Truly a nice day, for Maine... this time of year. This particular tap looks very early

I believe that is actually an old wooden barrel spigot, the guts of it are missing. It had a spring loaded valve with a handle on top. The thing sticking out in the front is where you tapped it into the barrel. They were usually made out of brass.
Thank You packrat-place, I have to agree with you, it must be quite old, I will throw it in a group lot...The ground has went back to frozen here in Maine..But I had a little run with the metal detector as a warm up.
