This book is in poor condition and needs to be rebound. Will rebinding devalue the book?
There is a popular poem from that time written by DuBose Heyward inside on the title page.DuBose was the author of Porgy. The Gershwin Bros. turned Porgy into Porgy and Bess the popular musical.
I know who the author is of the poem but I do not know who actually wrote this poem down in this book.
I have contacted the Library of Congress and they sent me a photo copy of DuBose' handwriting along with Dorothy Heywards handwriting, the co-author of Porgy, and the handwriting looks similar to Dorothys signature.
I do not know how to verify this.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am hoping to find more information on this book.

Looks like an interesting research project.

I'm no expert on books but, I am aware that some books are rebound with the original cover "bound in". I assume this would increase the value of a book by "stabilizing" it's condition and making it more attractive while preserving all its original components.
'I'm no expert on books but,' ...don't you just love it when someone says that? ...It often precedes some "well ment" B.S. :-)

I want to get the handwriting authenticated I just don't know how. It has been fun researching this. Learning a lot.

If you take a moment to google Dorothy Heyward autograph you will find everything you need to assure you this isn't her writing. It doesn't even come close.

As I said before and on your other postings. Have it done properly, pay for it and be sure. After you spend a few hundred dollars on books worth $5 you will get the hang of doing research yourself. It will be a lesson learned.

fhrjr2 I have googled. I see autographs to Dorothy Heyward which I aqgree look nothing like this handwriting but none of Dorothy Heyward. What's the name of the site you were looking at? And I have been searching on google all along.
In fact, the more I use it the more I'm confused. One site will say $6 another $160. What is it that makes one book more valuable than the other? They appear the same to me but I am no expert.
I came on to this website to learn how to research more thoroughly not to have anyone do it for me.
I have learned more about binding so I am thankful for that.
