I know nothing about this photo other than it is of my great grandfather in the late 1890's or so. Has anyone seen framing like this? It is on a 9" tin plate. Any info at all is appreciated.

I'm with you Jason. It's an interesting piece, fauxhouse. I find pieces like this quite poignant. When I enlarged it, it made me wonder if perhaps he died at sea or if it's just a reference to the Cross being a safe haven in a storm, such as losing a loved one. The rose reminded me of the poem/eulogy "The Rose Still Blooms Beyond the Wall". I know the poem was printed at least as early as October 26, 1916 and perhaps even earlier.

Beautiful button. I agree - a mourning pin/button/brooch.
Very lovely treasure. They used to make mourning brooches that look a bit different to your button with locks of hair inside. 1800's.
