This button has blown my mind for close to 12 years now. I found it in a mine field in Afghanistan in 2001, and I have yet to determine the origin. It is an amazing riddle, so I figured I would use Social Media and see if someone else knew. I can not find anything on a Uniform these would have been worn on or country of Origin. I assume French or Belgium.
It is silver, light metal, perhaps silver/brass and it says Administration Des Prisons. In the middle is a Lion. I know nothing else? Help?

That certainly looks like the rampant lion Belgium. I'd be focusing my search in that direction.
Why it would be in Afghanistan is beyond me. When my dad was digging in somewhere in Italy during WWII, he found an old coin that he kept as a good luck piece. It ended up being an ancient Greek coin, well over 1000 years old.
no backmark?
PegsButtons,
I added 2 additional photos of the button per request. There is no writing on the back, just a bunch of dashes around the fastener.
