well i believe its from 1800s no markings other then lock i think its been redone top drawer was fixed. on the lock it has 3 legs bent in triangle and says LEGHE with what i believe or hope to be L on top of V after the E in leghe. i cant find any info on trunk would love some help with any info
Nice old trunk -- looks to be from the late 1880's. I am not familiar with the lock maker but the lock is a standard type of its day and age. With no label it is difficult to identify who made it as there were many manufacturers making this type of trunk. The trunk is in great condition for its age. Thanks for the post.
When I first viewed your trunk I immediately thought "British". Trunks made in Great Britain have several tell tale signs. They often used Gold tone corner metal, and center bands. The used a great many large head nails (Saddler nails) on the valance, and slats . The nails securing the corners, and center bands had very small heads, and were far apart. These trunks were almost always covered with a coarse canvas on a flimsy Pine frame. Also the tray usually rested on a steel "shelf" in each corner, instead of a wood rail. The lock was made in Great Britain, and has the 3 legged man symbol (10 minutes research). This symbol is the national symbol of the Isle of Man, and has been around since the 13th century. Also British trunks tend to have been made quite a bit later than ones resembling American trunks. I would place yours around 1900 to 1920.
