About US Revenue Stamps

Revenue stamps were issued to prove that taxes or fees had been paid for items such as tobacco, playing cards, liquor, and hunting licenses. Though not to be used for postage, they often feature detailed designs and some contained anti-counterfeit devices. Revenue stamps date back to the 18th century and were commonly used in the 19th century.
