Let me introduce to one of the latest add-ons to my André Ricard collection… the Mas Casadevall candle-holders! I’ve got a lot of them I have to say. They come in boxes containing four candles each, and I’ve got two sets kept at my place, whereas the two other sets we use, especially when dining outside in the terrace. Unfortunately, as you can see, all the red ones I’ve got here have their edges slightly broken.

It is a very simple design that comes in two versions: clay and stoneware. It was designed for Ricard for the Mas Casadevall Foundation for autistic people. He’s been working for this project for over 15 years, and in his own words, they’re very simple designs, easy to make in order not to create any trouble when they make them, but they’re always something useful so they realize they are doing something that will actually be used, which is something else than just a mere exercise. So far he’s designed bowls, ashtrays, lamps, jugs and candles for them.

So here you have this 84 years old man who’s designing great stuff for these guys… I mean, isn’t he a great person as well as an even greatest designer?

The design is very simple, but is surprisingly good (not that surprising as it is a design by Ricard). The triangular curvy shape of the cup is perfect for it to be hold, as it fits perfectly in a gripping hand, plus the wider part on top helps a lot as it won’t fall out between your fingers. This wider top is also amazing because it reflects the light upwards –the white stoneware version reflects a strong whiter light whereas in the case of the clay version with a glossy finish on the inside walls you get a very cozy and warm reddish light coming from it-.
