The courage of European small car makers in the usa market

More than 50 years ago car makers like DAF in the Netherlands and Panhard in France had the courage to bring their rather small cars to the USA market. What would have been their expectations with engines of 600 to 850 cc on a market dominated by big cars with equally big engines? One can only guess.
