My mother's grandmother gave this to my mom before she died. I have never seen anything like this before. I love the detail, but I'm curios as to what those strange little symbols are for. The bottom of the plate has a basket weave design and there is a seam which makes me believe it's just carnival glass. I don't know if you can tell from the pics, but it's iridescent. If anyone can tell me about this plate it would be greatly appreciated

really nice piece of carnival glass : ) The maker is Dugan Glass Co. The interior pattern was called 'Roundup' and the exterior pattern called 'Basketweave'. I think the color here is amethyst.

@ Tallcakes... the weird symbols are called round up?
    5. TallCakes TallCakes, 10 years ago
the pattern was named "Roundup" and from what I understand the 'figures' around the center are symbolic of the brands used on the cattle that were in the "roundup".

In the pictures it is hard to tell if it is a low ruffled bowl or a plate. When the piece sit on a table how high is the edge from the table, one inch, three inches, or more?

Remember, the Roundup name was coined by early authors (in this case, Hartung, I believe). In the early 1900s when this was made, things exotic were quite popular. This was some designer's fanciful interpretation of something exotic from a far away land and most likely does not actually represent something specific.
