I forgot about this old pocket watch that my mom gave me whtn my dad passed away 23 years ago. I was recently going thru some stuff and rediscovered it and decided to look it up on line. I was very surprised to see that it had to be made between 1864 and 1874 since it is labled National Watch Company. My grandfather worked on the railroads all throughout Virginia and I assume It was his. I hope to find out more from some family members soon. It is open faced, not decorated. I am not even sure how to open it. I am thinking of taking it to a watch repair person that we know and finding out if it is worth anything. It certainly is to me!
Hello, I just saw your watch and it's a beauty! In case you didn't know, it is probably a key wind watch. If you open the back cover, you will see a small hole. There should be a small key that fits in the hole and you wind the watch that way. Also, if you pry open the inner cover with you thumbnail, you will see the working and a serial number. This will identify exactly when your watch was made.
