This item is a 1930's 'Art Deco' style, lady's folding compact case. According to it's patent number, it was designed by Simon Morrison of Brooklyn, NY. in the 1920's. It has a stainless steel lifting mirror with two spots for make-up underneath. The lower section has a sliding compartment with a slide open section for powder. I have seen a similar one in gold plate. Not sure of the material on this.

Thanks PDAM. What's a bit strange is that there are two pat numbers associated with this item. One for the case and the other for the sliding powder tray.
