The second photo is how she looked when I brought her home. She was in an awful state. Whatever that used to be on her peeled off with soap, water and elbow grease. Maybe the remnants of her outfit - no idea. I think she is beautiful, now that she is squeaky clean! She has a hand painted bisque face and neck, and her hand is also bisque. The rest is glazed. Nothing at all on the bottom (other than a hole), which is unglazed. The crane has a blaze of red paint on his head and his beak is painted with gold leaf.

    She is 6 inches high.

    Anybody??

Oh! The swan is not a swan... It is a red crowned crane :-)

kyratango, you're a gem~! The only thing that screamed "Japanese" to me is the hairdo. Asian bits and bobs are beyond my realm of knowledge. I never heard of a red crowned crane. I wish I could find a likeness of this figurine. I don't know for certain what all that nasty gunk was on her, but glad it's gone.

Thanks everybody! That little mark on her face that looks like a teardrop has been carefully removed. She no longer looks like she's crying! :-) I don't imagine she is supposed to be white porcelain - she must have had some sort of coloring on her clothing. In any event, she is rather unique.
