Can anyone tell me anything about this? There are no markings on the ashtray there is a old tag on the back that says marvin – something that I can't read and then California underneath that

Your ashtray is from the 1950s. The name is Marvin-Charles. Just next to nothing on the web about him. Here is another example of his work:

Already did, robin56 :-) I tried several combinations. Nothing comes up besides the vase I listed.

Thanks!!! I actually found that green vase but could not find another thing on marvin Charles. At least I am now confidant it is his!! I will keep looking!
