Requesting help identifying the model of this 8 day clock. It has been in my family since it was originally given as a gift. My grandfather had told that it was a wedding present to his parents, and they married in 1884. But according to what i've read, the "backwards" date print on the back of the clock indicates it was manufactured in 1899, so it may have been a 15th anniversary gift if correct. I assume the "E" may indicate the month of May. The upper left hand corner of the sticker on the back shows "No. 104" but i find no cross reference if it is supposed to be a model number. The filigree is black metal. Any help is much appreciated!

Hello familyresearcher. Welcome to Collectorsweekly. I can help you with this. Your heirloom Seth Thomas is from their "Metal Series". Yours is called "Metals No. 1". It was made in Oak. My reference has it from circa 1900. Your interpretation of the date code is spot on. These clocks originally listed for $22.65 which was a *lot* of money back then. (when adjusted for inflation, approximately $650 in 2015).

      Here's another example: http://clockinfo.com/posts/5401

If you do an internet search on Seth Thomas Metals Series, you'll see more examples of the No. 1 along with others. I believe there were six different models.

Hope this helps to solve your mystery. If so, please indicate "Mystery Solved" in your posting.

Thanks for sharing your heirloom with us. It looks like it has been kept in great shape!
