19c American oil painting

I purchased this painting that was being sold as a 19c American oil likely created by a student at an American art school. I'm unsure if that is true, but haven't a clue how to truly identify an unsigned piece. Can anyone out there tell me if the description I was given sounds correct or not and how I might identify the artist if at all? I'm trying to solve all the mysteries in my home once and for all.
