My uncle has this photo (from the same bunch that I've been posting), but I figured that I could help the whole family out by finding out some information. Is this from the civil war era? I have an original civil war discharge paper, that was my 4th great grandfather's. I have been hoping that this is him because we have no photos of him. What kind of photo is it? I did not take it out of the original frame, so I cannot describe it. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give!!
I cannot tell the format of this photograph.
It may be a tintype or it may be an albumen print (early paper photograph).
As far as era, my FIRST reaction was post Civil War; however, when I looked at it closely the man appears to be wearing a military 4 button sack coat. It very well could be a Civil War soldier.
Can you take it out of the frame? Often, names and locations are written on the back of the paper mattings. If not, add a photograph of the back of the frame.

I do not believe it is a tin type, but I am going to get it out of the frame if possible and see if I can tell what format it is. I thought the uniform was civil war also, do you know if civil war soldiers typically took pictures after the war in their uniforms? Thanks again!!!!!
