A protective collar for dogs used during bear and other big game hunting...

It's a calf weaner. The round part would slip over the calves nose and the strap around the neck. The cows would get a poke when the calves tried to suckle, and would kick them off. Here's some pic's of other weaners or blabs. Hundreds were patented. http://www.liatca.org/thumbnail_folders/aug05.html

Wow, how harsh! Our weaning practices are much easier lol. What time period was this used?

I would say this one is 30s-50s. Here's a patent of one from the 1800's Funny drawing, but it gives how they were used. http://www.google.com/patents?id=XudYAAAAEBAJ&pg=PA2&dq=Calf+Weaner+leather+spikes&hl=en&ei=8OhLTs__KIKlsAKbjrHNCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CC0Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=Calf%20Weaner%20leather%20spikes&f=false

Apparently these were used to protect farm animals from coyote attacks. I have also seen something much like this used to ween calfs off of the mothers milk.
