I saw a cross like this posted. This one is embelleshed with a gold symbol on the front and a gold chain. It was given to me in 2009. Can someone tell me about this design and the chain?

It seems to be a carved onyx mourning piece from about 1880s that was originally worn on a matching beaded necklace.

Do you think the initials and chain was an add on? I saw a picture on this site of a silver piece with the same exact type of chain.
