I received this box in 1960 from an old lady who loved going to auctions. There is a signature inside that may be the name of the previous owner or the artist that carved the piece. I like to know what period this piece belongs and what type of wood were used for these pieces.

Sandalwood
This is not the same or a very similar cardholder that I just sold in auction at I. M. Chait in Los Angeles.
I inherited to from my stepmother who loved to buy in auctions in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I believe that the ink signature inside is the name of the carver. Anyway, these are
unique pieces, that represent an era long gone.
Sorry, I forgot to mention the wood is sandalwood. The pieces are from late 1800, hand carved.
From Guangzhou (Canton) card box made for export. The date sounds right. Inscription "fahao" is not a name, but I don't know what that is. Literally means "name of the dharma," the term refers to names adopted by Buddhist monks when they become monks.
