Philadelphia & Erie Railroad Lantern

Philadelphia & Erie brass top, bell bottom railroad lantern made by the Adams & Westlake Co., in Chicago in the early 1870's. This early example is prominently marked P.& E.R.R on the lid reflector and is equipped with a sliding collar to secure the globe tightly. This classic, no. 39 railroad lantern has an early style, pointed brass top complete with draft holes, and a chimney bail. There are many patent dates stamped in the lid, the latest of which is 1865. There are also several Wm Westlake patent dates stamped into the underside of the base, the latest of which is 1865. The lantern remains in original condition with a rich, medium patina. The bayonet base collar is stamped "no. 39 Globe", sometimes found on lanterns of this vintage, indicating the correct globe style for this lantern. The flashed red, extended base globe is wheel cut with P. & E. R. R., completing this rare piece. I wish all railroad lanterns had a rich, smooth, medium patina like this one!
