5.5" tall x 6"dia. hollow sealed glass globe with holder or rim for a tie
or a wire atop. Might this have been for decoration or perhaps a float? My guess is not as good as yours.

This definitely reminds me of a Leerdam design by A.D. Copier. Is there an etched mark underneath?
No markings at all, kind of reminds me of a float thought
There is no opening that's merely a grasping or a tie point. It's totally sealed
With no opening the float idea is good but it might also be a "sun catcher" as you suggest. A bit gig for a Xmas bauble.

I would have never guessed, I saw 4 smaller ones today at the resale shop, they were different colors. A glass collector told me what they were, I didn't understand how they wold not break, but if you google them, i guess the heavy rope they tie around them prevents that. Cool post, thanks. Nice to learn something new.
It looks like some of these are sold for decoration purposes also.
at first I thought it was a float, but then guess differently, I used to have the Japanese floats in all colors, picked them up along the coast in Oregon
Maybe if you are not recognizing this like the ones you found, it is for decoration only?
I might have to agree with qwijebo about them being floats. Growing up in Hawaii we would have colored ones come to shore, the fishing boats would use them to keep their fishing nets afloat, the fishing nets were fairly large and heavy so they would need several of them to hold up the nets. The normal colors were greens sort of camoflauge in the ocean, I did see a few of them that were clear, most of the time when they did come ashore they had barnacles on them because they had been in the ocean so long. The sizes varied from baseball size up to basketball size, a few that my dad collected were even bigger then that. I hope this has helped you some
i'm sure it is a glass float. if you look at American glass floats it is similar in shape. what company ... not sure. is there any embossing on the bottom.
