Carrera Italian marble coffee table with Venice scene

I bought this at a garage sale. The wooden base has been redone several times. The marble top is a fat 's' and is white and gray. The bottom of the marble says "GENUINE WHITE CARRARA MADE IN ITALY." It is about 5" long. The design is etched into the marble and it is painted with something that looks like metal. I would really like to know the history of this piece.
