Taking advantage of good local clay, the Nelson McCoy Sanitary Stoneware Co. opened in 1910 in Roseville, Ohio, to manufacture decorative stoneware and food storage products. After struggling through the Great Depression, the company changed its name to McCoy Pottery Company, and focused on more marketable ornamental and figural planters (e.g. its famous 'hunting dog' and 'old mill by the stream' designs). McCoy made mostly cookie jars after WW2.
