Evergreen trees have been part of Christmas celebrations since the 16th century, commonly decorated with fruit, nuts, and simple silver tinsel. Tree decorating became common in mid 1800’s America, and ornately festooned ‘high Victorian’ trees gained popularity in the 1880’s. The space age 1950’s brought aluminum trees, often spun around slowly with a small motor. While mostly produced in silver, small quantities of other colors (e.g. pink) were produced and are today quite rare.
Christmas antiques and collectibles abound, ranging from hand-crafted folk items to modern limited-edition works. Whether thematic (Santa, nutcrackers, reindeer, elves) or functional (trees, ornaments, lights, bells, records), they usually evoke the warmth and cheer of holidays celebrated the old-fashioned way.
