Mantel (also spelled mantle) clocks are meant to sit on a mantle above the fireplace. First made in England in the 1500s, they come in a wide variety of styles, and were mass-produced by the American clock-making industry in the 1800s. Mantel clocks are the basis for the design of today’s alarm and desktop clocks.
People have been collecting clocks for centuries, and there’s a lot to learn. From famous makers like Ansonia, New Haven, Ingraham, Waterbury and Sessions to functional categories like wall, grandfather (long case), mantel, regulator, cuckoo and alarm, there’s a wide variety of clocks to choose from and learn about.
