Hemingray Glass Co., incorporated in 1870, operated factories in Kentucky and Indiana and was one of the leading insulator manufacturers in the U.S. Hemingray also manufactured other glass items like bottles, fruit jars, kerosene lamps, and tableware. The company was sold to Owens-Illinois Glass Co. in 1933.
Of all insulator manufacturers, Hemingray produced the most different styles and were in production for the longest time. They made color insulators on purpose (as opposed to the typical practice of re-cycling a batch of colored glass to make insulators). They were also the makers of the Hemingray 42, the best selling insulator of all time, produced in the millions.
