What a beauty! Looks like it's depicting a Japanese theatrical performance of some sort. The seated male figure is playing a tsuzumi (double-headed drum) that is balanced on his shoulder. The standing figure next to him is surely dancing (note the sword at his right hip!). No idea what this specifically depicts; it'd be worth asking on forums devoted to the Japanese arts. But the artwork is gorgeous, and the vase "handles" in photo #2 are very elegant. Great find for nine quid!
