This is my first trunk! The only identification on it is the Corbin lock. One of the side stays has an address penciled on it. The canvas and stays are in good condition and I want to keep them as is, only cleaner. I'd like to brighten the brass plated hardware but am unsure of how to do this without harming the canvas. I'd like to replace the leather handles and straps. On the inside I'm scraping off the old paper. Any information y'all could give me about how to fix up this old beauty would be greatly appreciated as would any information about its age, maker or so forth.

Cool old trunk. Just wanted to pass along some info that I learned when researching one of my old trunks. The wealthier classes would use trunks with highly arched lids because they didn't want their luggage to be on the bottom.

Apparently, the flat lids stack much better than the arched lids.

Sorry, but that is the worst trunk story that just wont go away. Round or Barrel top (two different tops) trunks were made that way for styling and that's all. They did NOT get put on last, and prior to the 1900's they weighed more than the smaller, flatter top (gentleman's) trunks. Many of these trunks weighed close to 100 lbs empty, and the last thing a trunk porter cared about was how fancy the trunk was or its shape. More often then not trunks were stood on end.

The trunk is a very nice condition fiber bound, canvas covered trunk from around 1910-1920.
