I love this type of Mexican pottery Meli... We have a set of Talavera shot glasses we picked up in Mexico many years ago. Thanks for sharing!
Talavera or Tonala? Either way, quite lovely. :)
Definitely Talavera... Tonala would have more of a smooth matte finish with painted decoration.
It has a Talavera finish, I agree. However the design is almost quintessential Tonala, not really Talavera. Talavera is generally associated with the look of ornate Spanish tiles, Tonala has the flor de Nahual decor, or variations of it, which is what this looks like to me. Of course pieces like this, made for export, can cross over. :)

Here are some examples of Tonala... much much different - notice the dull matte finish as opposed to the high gloss finish on Talavera which is a result of the type of glaze applied which is not used on Tonala. Also, most Talavera uses a Morrish geometric pattern repeating itself similar to Meli's. Lastly, Meli's were made in Puebla which is where Talvera is made. Tonola comes from Jalisco and I wouldn't expect a Tonala piece to say Puebla. These two types of pottery are often confused, and you will find examples of each being sold as the other.

I have a Tonala bell that comes from Cozumel. As for the decor, as I stated before, especially with pieces made for the tourist market, demand shapes supply, and decors cross borders. I see this as a cross between the two. However, I do not wish to argue with someone far more expert in this field of Mexican pottery than myself. If you say it's Talavera, then it certainly must be Talavera.
No Katherine, it's not arguing, it's nothing more than an exchange of opinions (which we all have). Like you said, "decors cross borders", so you never know. Let's leave it as Tonalavera lol.
