    Item back handle is attached to a 1/4" steel rod that slides back and forth. End of rod is pointed, but may have had an attachment.
    Total length is 24in. Large brass block at the lower end reads Hungerford 8.

      This is a guess and nothing more except an old mind kicking into gear. I think this was used to make and/or repair braided rag rugs.

      Fhr, your experience is obviously more than mine!

      I think fhrjr2 meant "hooked" rugs (punched through fabric) but rug hooking tools are only 8 to 10 inches long and have a hole in the end of the needle part. The style of the handles is mid-19th C. Interesting that the brass (copper?) part is adjustable relative to the needle to set the limit of needle penetration.
