    An arm and hand holding a lance with an axe head. Just found in ground that has not been touched for a very long time.

      in the second picture it looks like there may be some writing/marks....may be once it's cleaned really well on the back you may have some clues.

      Thank you, i am going to soak it in soapy water and give it another clean. I think it should say the maker's name on the back.

      I wouldn't recommend cleaning it - you could ruin it. It 'looks' very old, and I doubt you would find a maker's name on a piece of this type. imho handle it carefully, and try and find an expert on these things. You might want to try and find out what was on, or around the land, you found it on/in.

      Thank you Gillian it was found in an old farm yard dating back to around 1600. My Grandfather and Great Grandfather used to milk cows there.

      It looks copper or brass & cleaning it enough to read the makers info shouldn't hurt much. You can almost make out some of the letters now. Button history is an easy search with that info. Of course you can leave it alone & you have just an old button with no known history .
