I'm not sure what this tool is or what it was used for, I'm hoping someone can help me. It goes in a brace and bit, has a blade which is bevelled on both sides and has some sort of gauge in the centre.

Known as a hollow auger, it is used to put round tenons on wood parts like wheel spokes or chair rungs. The center gauge is the depth stop which controls how long the tenon will be. The gauge is usually missing.

Thanks Slackjack, I'm still not sure hoe it works, I'll see if I can master it.

You drive it with a bit brace - sort of the opposite of drilling a hole. :-)
