This item has me stumped. I am a mechanical/technical kind of person and cannot figure out this item. The case is a kind of stoneware, non-conductive material. When the left side extendable tape-like steel strip is fully extended the exact measurement is 72 inches from the pointed left side to the point on the right side. It is conductive(an electrical current will flow from point to point)(I don't know if this is important or not). There are no markings anywhere on the item and no markings(eg. inches-millimeters) on the left side pull out section. The chrome button on top is spring loaded and retracts the left side when it is extended.

Tape measure with letters etc. worn off. From the pointer to where the tape comes out will be a specific distance, like maybe 2".

Thanks for your thoughts. I had originally thought that also but there are absolutely no remnants of numbers or lines left anywhere on the entire six foot length of metal tape when it is extended. It is just a bare metal strip. Even a well used, worn out tape measure will still have some indications remaining(paint, partial numbers, lines)

The only other use then is comparing distances.
