The city of Shawnee, Oklahoma, is named after the Shawnee tribe, which settled nearby after the Trail of Tears. The Shawnee, at one point, were also called the Kickapoo, although legend has it they fractured into two tribes over a bear's paw.
The main drag in Shawnee the city is Kickapoo Street/Road, also known as The 'Poo. As it's also a fun word to say, a plethora of Shawnee, OK, businesses have Kickapoo in the name.
The Kickapoo Motel has one of those great modernist '60s space-age signs. Oklahoma has so many fantastic old signs like this one, and I fear they will all be torn down in the next century. I hope someday to go around Oklahoma photographing all of these historic signs.

I remember staying in many motels with signs like that in my childhood on those looong frequent summer roadtrips with my mom & dad. Miss them and the great old chromey cars they had back then.
I wonder if any of these old signs are still lighted or if they are all in various states of disrepair?
