This has been in our family for years. The story is that my great grandmother picked it up in the South West in the 1920's while driving to California. Anybody know anything about it? I haven't seen anything similar on the internet.

Sorry, but it's not Native American. Where something was purchased may have nothing to do with where it was made. This, for example, is a split bamboo sewing basket, from China.
They must have been popular imports during that time period, since it seems like every grandmother on the West Coast had one, and they still show up at most estate sales, and on line. The design is said to have been copied from Chinese wedding baskets, but they were used primarily for sewing baskets in the U.S., so that's what they are usually called. A web search for "Chinese sewing basket" will show examples, and confirm.
Thank you so much! Mystery solved. This makes sense for our family history. My great grandmother picked up quite a few Navajo samplers while moving from Mississippi to California in 1925. The basket, due to the design on top got lumped into the South West portion of the story. What's nice is that it has been handed down from generation to generation and now my niece who is sewing and quilting will be using her great, great grandmother's sewing basket. As the commercial goes... priceless.
