The lindberg Line

During model railroading's heyday, everyone wanted to cash in on the bonanza. Numerous plastics manufacturers, already familiar with the injection molding process, cut new dies, and entered the ring. Some names were already quite familiar, Lindberg being one of them. Their product line, which featured several types of freight cars, and a caboose, included but a single locomotive, this very highly detailed EMD SW switcher (a GE locomotive pilot model never entered production). It was offered in 4 different road names, as shown, here. The C&NW and B&O units were probably most prevalent. The Illinois Central, a later scheme, is certainly the hardest to find. The somewhat complicated drive mechanism was not very reliable, and sales must have been very disappointing. Too bad, considering this was one of the finest shells available, at that time. I have numerous examples, some of which run quite well. They quit the business in the late 60's/early 70's.
