Came across this portrait year's ago. Tucked it away in a safe spot til I found it days ago. Looking at it now, I see how well done it is!! I can see the Twead in his vest. I think there's a signature bottom right under oval, but I can't make it out.
Handsome guy with what I call a Bird's nest Beard. Marked # 228 on back. Painted on cardboard.
    Any info on him
    Will be very helpful???

Is the oval portion applied to the cardboard backer? Check near an edge— easiest spot to tell.

Scott Yes it is! Very fine around the outside oval. Is the portrait painted over a photograph?

Yes— it is a painted photograph. These were very popular in the late 19th century.
