This trench art cartridge letter opener was probably made in 1916 and has some interesting engraving.

Once side has "Guerre" or War and the dates of "1914, 1915, 1916" along with the dove-- probably wishful thinking of a soldier three years into trench warfare.

The other side has engraving that I haven't been able to completely decipher. I know "Haillicourt" is a Northern France city near Arras and that while troops were quartered there, I don't believe there was any fighting. I don't have any idea on the "P-D-C" or the "26, A OUT, 1916".

I would think this is a reference to something military, but it has me stumped!

    Help is greatly appreciated.

What a beautifully executed and special piece, Scott.

Haillicourt is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. Therefore, I would think that

      P-D-C is Pas-de-Calais

Forgot to add that the info above is from wiki. Also from wiki:

"Although the department [Pas-de-Calais] saw some of the heaviest fighting of World War I, its population rebounded quickly after both world wars."

Thanks Knives, so it is dated "26 August 1916".

Solver-- I did some research on the town of Haillicourt and saw it was in Pas-de-Calais region, but never put that together with "P-D-C"!

Based on this information, the letter opener appears to be war era and purchased or soldier made in Haillicourt.

Thanks again to Knivesnsuch and solver.
