I inherited this clock and wondered how old it was. Would anyone recognize the time frame it was manufactured?

      Hello Karen from Ohio!

You have a Seth Thomas Adamantine Black Mantel Clock. It features distinctive bronze gold pilasters, matching lion ornaments and feet. Seth Thomas made this clock for the Larkin Soap Company back in the late 1800's to early 1900's. This clock was known in the Larkin Soap Catalog as the #722. To get this clock new, you would have to redeem so many coupons, or buy an assortment of soaps that they offered as their Great Combination Box (approximately $10 worth of soap: $260 adjusted for inflation in 2010). Even today, this is a popular and fairly common Seth Thomas. You see them up for auction pretty often on Ebay. If the clock is in excellent condition, on average they go for $200-$250 on Ebay. It's a very nice clock. It was popular for good reasons.

Thank you so much for this information! It is an old family clock..., that is I don't want to sell it. Too sentimental for me.

You're welcome. I completely understand. You must come from a very clean family because they had to buy a lot of soap to get one of these clocks! :) The Adamantine finish is referred to as "celluloid" veneer. If you decide to clean up the case, use a non-abrasive water-less hand cleaner like "Goop" and plenty of clean, soft rags. You'll be amazed at the amount of dirt that accumulates over the course of a century. Once the surface is clean, a good quality auto wax really helps restore the original appearance of the clock in a totally reversible manner (which is important). Be careful of any areas that are damaged or where the veneer may be flaking away from the wood. Go to Ebay and search on 250891009232. That is the item number of a clock that just recently sold which is very similar to yours. It will show you just how nicely they can clean up.
Take care and enjoy your heirloom.
