    These two identical fixtures, one open, the other more closed, I believe to be old time tools used during home construction. Perhaps they were used to space beams? But this is just my best guess.

      Those are ladder jacks. You hook them on the rungs of two ladders and put a plank between them to walk on while you work. They are not old ....just in used condition.

      I have three from the 70's that look identical to the ones in the picture. I still use them as back up to the newer aluminum ladder jacks. It takes a little practice to set them up level with the jack in one hand,and the plank in the other,while two or three stories up.
