Now for something completely different from camera collecting. While attending a recent antique show, my wife and I stopped at a dealer booth to look at what appeared to be a nice Draught Guinness poster with the well known toucans. What we found was an original signed John Gilroy painting on canvas; better yet, the study to create a poster.

Gilroy is the most famous of all Guinness artists and the painting was made when he was employed as an in-house artist with the S H Benson Ltd advertising agency.

What's marvelous is the study includes dabs of paint at the edges to check the color pallet, pencil markings showing how the poster would be finished, and revision comments from reviews.

We ended up acquiring three original Guinness paintings (studies) and the mailing tube complete with paper address label. The acquisition was perfect because I'm a long time Guinness Stout fan!

Agreed this is pretty cool ... thanks ... I'm now researching to learn if a poster based on the painting was ever produced. As far as age, it's probably c.1956 based on another Guinness painting with the original S.H. Benson label.

Love it! If you should ever decide to part with it, please contact me. I have 2 such canvases and would love to ad to my collection. One is of a fisherman landing a whopper w/ title Guinness For Strength and the other under the same title with an oarsmen carrying a rowing shell with his crew members aboard! What other canvases to you acquire?

If you would, could you please tell me approximately what you paid for the original Gilroy canvas for the Guinness poster? I have an option to purchase one or more of these original canvases at a price that seems rather high, so I thought if I had an idea of a recent price it would help greatly.

how much is something like this worth (or be a reasonable purchase price)? I've found an original study just like this in a store and would die to have it, but I am afraid they are asking WAY too much. Any advice would be appreciated!

What sort of price are they asking?
  8. krupnic, 1 month, 19 days ago
they are asking $2,200. Its an amazing one of a kind piece, but I'm just have no idea if this is too much or in fact I might be getting a good deal?!?!?!
