This particular coin was found in a pile of silver dollars that I acquired from my father's estate. I believe that it is a rare coin. Does anyone know anything about it? It is in great condition with just minimal wear and tear. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

You have an 1894 O - notice the mintmark on the reverse just above the DO in dollar. This could be very valuable depending on the graded condition. Always handle this by the edges as any additional wear to the faces will decrease the value drastically. According to my 2006 value book, the price range for this coin in AU 50 (almost uncirculated)- $275. , Mint State 60 -$600., Mint State 63 -$3400., Mint State 64 - $9,000., Mint State 65 (perfect condition) $45,000. - any little scratch or blemish will decrease the value and please note the values given are from a 6 year old value book (2006 Redbook - U.S. Coins)
Thank you for the information mustangtony. You are right, it is an 1894 O. How do you determine the Mint State? Would I take it to a coin collector for that? - Or would it tell me in a book? I know it is not in perfect condition - but the overall condition is pretty good - Dad did have this one in plastic. Thanks for all your help.
Proper grading would be essential in getting an accurate value. It is hard to do from a picture. I can see there is some wear on the obverse in the high points along the hairline and where her ear is. Also the leaf lines are worn in the crown. On the reverse the high points are the eagles head, neck, and breast feathers which are well worn and and the wreath leaves have their details worn. I would hope you could at least get a grade of VF-20 out of this as below that it is basically going to be around silver melt value. VF (very fine) value would be in the $50-$60 range. Your coin is not in the Mint State range. A coin dealer would be a better bet for a proper grading, and a reputable dealer will be honest. (But never let them take it out of your sight, I have had the experience of dealers trying a quick switch). Just for your info - the total mintage of this year and mintmark was 1,723,000 coins and I would say many of those are worn from use and a lot have been melted for their silver content (and no one knows how many were melted)
Thank you so much for the information mustangtony. I truly appreciate it. I will have it checked out. It is definitely worn when compared to mint state. Thanks for alerting me to the "dealer switch" trick also.
