Regimental beer stein of a Prussian Garde Uhlan, Rudolf Fahrmeister who served in the first squadron of this elite cavalry unit from 1905-1908. garrisoned at Potsdam. Potsdam is the capital city of the German federal state of Brandenburg and part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. It is situated on the River Havel, 24 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Berlin city centre.
In Germany, Potsdam had the status that Windsor has in Britain: it was the residence of the Prussian kings and German Kaisers, until 1918. Many Garde units were garrisoned here, including the Kaiser's personal bodyguard, the Gard du Corps.
The stein has side panels depicting a cavary charge, and a Uhlan being served refreshment by a fraulein. The central panel pictures two Uhlans riding before their garrison, flags of Prussia flanking weapons, helmet and the shoulderboard of the unit. The pewter lid is topped by a high-rearing horse ridden by a Uhlan with lance. The spread-winged Prussian eagle thumblift has a stanhope in the orb that he stands on, but the scene is missing. The Garde Star that once was suspended from the eagle's beak has been lost to time. A colorful and very rare stein.
