I don't know even a tiny bit about ceramics/pottery- whatever this is. I got it at a thrift store in Brooklyn for a ridiculous price of 1.00! I like it very much, this bowl, the inside and even the outside though I'm not real thrilled with the chipping of the outside. Does anyone know anything about this type item and can you tell me why its flaking/chipping away?

Its a Fantoni, there used to be leather on the bottom, looks like its rotting
Fantoni was an Italian artist, Mid Century

That stuff that's flaking off was leather? WOW! Stillwater, thank you sooo much for solving this mystery! So I do have a good eye, right? Except for the rotting leather part, of course!!! Thanks so much! Wow!

Yeah I'd say so, Fantoni is good stuff, the larger pieces can be valuable
