Paper on this trunk is 95 % in tact, I understand thats pretty rare. I believe it to be civil war era. Don't know the maker. The lock is brass with key.
Would like more info on this trunk, care, restoring, replacing the envelope on inside. Missing handles and some leather straps, has wood slats and brass tacks. Would like to clean up and polish, replace straps and handles, plus redo the inside.

Hi, yes, the trunk is a Jenny Lind style, but based on extensive research I've done, this type was made from the late 1860's until about 1870-2. The paper of course was made to resemble tooled leather which was put on the more expensive models of that time. The lock and tacks or studs are brass as you said and it doesn't hurt anything to polish them up. When the paper, leather or other covering is in good original condition it is always advisable to try to preserve it. The handles and straps can be replaced in the original style also, using the original holders, brass tacks, etc. The papers envelope can be duplicated and replaced. Heck I love all of your trunks. But I really love anything within 10 years of the Civil War which this gorgeous trunk fits right in. Very nice piece.
It's hard to believe that the paper has survived all that time, as you can imagine the paper is very fragile. My understanding is that it is very unusual to find these trunks with that much paper left.
Marvin has helped me with this trunk, he got me some period specific handles and made me a period envelope to go inside the top. I'll get some more pictures posted soon.
