13.5" x 2" x 6" folk art or prototype of a reversible gate that could open on one side of the posts and close on the other. If cattle moved from one pasture to another pressed against the gate the posts would give it additonal support. Clever idea.
Curiously Joseph F. Glidden, considered to be the Father of barbed wire, used a similar hanger for the gate he patented in 1891 although his hanger was attached firmly to the gate and it opened and closed on the same side. Was someone expanding on Glidden's idea?
