Vintage Red Velvet Gold Gilt Wooden Frame

I picked up this picture frame yesterday at a large, unorganized 'Estate Sale' for $5.00! I just love it. I think the photo is of a First Holy Communion. What type of photo do you think would look good in this style of frame? Does anyone know possibly what year this could be. The backing is also wood. It measures approximately 16" x 14".
