Bought this today at the Highway 127 yard sale. It is leather on the outside with some areas that are tooled. It has an expandable or telescoping lid, which is pretty neat. The inside appears to be canvas material and it has a document holder on the inside of the lid. The bottom has a name along with some numbers. I'm not sure the significance of the numbers. I wondered if they might be military. I have no idea how old this is. The man whom I bought it from really didn't know either but he thought that it might be from the 1800s. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know but it looks to me to be the transition from trunk to suitcase. Others will know better. Thanks for the post

Thanks for the love, trunkman and manikin and the comment trunkingforfun. I found out from Jim at HMS Trunks that this is a bellows suitcase from the early 1900s. This was the first one that I've seen.

Jim is always a terrific source. He is expert having done the research.
