bird picture made from cut and colored bamboo?

What the heck is this style is called? My friend has had hers for years but doesn't know what to call them. She says they are Japanese pictures of birds made of tiny pieces of (guessing) dyed bamboo. They seem to be mounted on silk. Anyone know? Thanks!
