Antique bucket with tab | Collectors Weekly

This medium-small sized bucket was found in Germany. It's capacity would be about 2-2.5 gallons. Not extremely ornate, but was made attractively. I don't know what the "tab" build into it was for. The tab is wider at the top than at the bottom and not drilled for a handle. What was this type bucket built to do?

these are called piggins usually used like a ladle for lifting liquids you will find some information on link below

After looking around some more, I think I have the bucket from an old butter churn. It's been turned on a lathe to make the bands on the outside, and since it would've been in a kitchen, seems to make sense that it was dressed up a bit.
What do you think?

agree - resembles a butter churn.

I have seen butter churns made like that. Don't know what the 'tab' is actually for though. Could be to steady it with one hand, could be to pick it up after the butter has been removed and just the milk is left?
